Chasing Brook Trout in the Heart of Southwest Virginia

Chasing Brook Trout in the Heart of Southwest Virginia

There’s something special about stepping into a cold, clear mountain stream, the rhythmic rush of water filling the air as you cast a delicate fly toward a shadowy undercut. In Southwest Virginia, we are blessed with some of the most beautiful small streams and overlooked fishing spots in the state. While many anglers flock to well-known waters like the Jackson and Smith Rivers, those who truly know the area understand that the real magic happens in the hidden hollows of the Blue Ridge.

One of my favorite spots? Cornelius Creek in Buchanan. Nestled within the Jefferson National Forest, this small stream offers pristine waters and a healthy population of native brook trout. With special regulation waters protecting these gems, Cornelius Creek is an ideal destination for those looking to slow down and appreciate the art of small-stream fishing. There’s something about watching a wild brook trout rise to a dry fly in water no wider than a hiking trail that keeps me coming back.

If you’re heading out early, start your day at North Star Restaurant in Buchanan. This no-frills, cash-only diner opens at 6 AM and serves up hearty breakfasts that fuel long days on the water. Their sign says it best: “We don’t have WiFi, pretend like it’s 1990 and talk to each other.” It’s the perfect stop before disappearing into the mountains.

The Local Fly Shops That Keep Us On the Water

Every good fishing trip starts long before you hit the water. Whether you’re tying flies the night before or stopping into a fly shop for some last-minute intel, preparation is half the fun. In Roanoke, we’re lucky to have The Roanoke Angler and Orvis Roanoke, two fly shops that not only provide the right gear but also the right advice.

The team at Roanoke Angler knows these waters like the back of their hand, and if you need a fly recommendation or a local stream report, they won’t steer you wrong. Likewise, Orvis Roanoke is more than just a retail store, it’s a hub for the local fly fishing community. Whether you need a new reel, a guide for the day, or just a place to swap stories, it’s worth stopping in before heading out.

A Basecamp for Adventure

After a long day of chasing trout, there’s nothing better than kicking back at a place that feels like home. If you’re looking for a great home base for your fishing trip, The Lilly Valley Inn in Pearisburg is a hidden gem. This charming inn offers the perfect blend of comfort and convenience, making it a great spot to recharge before another day on the water.

If you need help getting on the right fish, Tangent Outfitters has you covered. These guys know the area better than anyone and can get you on everything from small-stream brookies to larger river small mouth and muskie. Whether you need gear, a shuttle, or a full-day guided trip, they’re a valuable resource for any angler exploring Southwest Virginia.

A Local Favorite: The Roanoke River at Green Hill Park

Not every fishing trip needs to be deep in the mountains. One of my favorite local spots is Green Hill Park, just outside of Roanoke. This section of the Roanoke River is regularly stocked and offers great opportunities for both beginners and seasoned anglers. It’s the perfect place for an afternoon session when you don’t have time to make a full-day trek. Plus, with easy public access, it’s a great spot to introduce new anglers to the sport.

The One Thing I Never Fish Without

Every angler has their lucky charm—the one thing they won’t hit the water without. For me, it’s my ROA Trucker Hat. Its natural color tones blend seamlessly into the surroundings, and the breathability keeps me cool on long days in the sun. Whether I’m knee-deep in a mountain stream or wading the Roanoke River, it’s my go-to companion for every trip.

If you haven’t taken the time to explore the small streams and hidden fishing spots just beyond Roanoke, you’re missing out on one of the best parts of living here. So grab your fly rod, stop by a local fly shop, fuel up at North Star, and head to a place where the water runs clear, the fish are wild, and the only thing that matters is the next cast.
